Multiple explosions have occurred at the Bauchi Road motor park in Jos, the Plateau state capital, and many people are feared killed.
The park is a major bus terminus within Jos, located adjacent the main campus of the University of Jos.
A witness, Awalu Sani, told PREMIUM TIMES the explosions killed a yet unknown number of people, injuring several others and destroying many vehicles.
Another witness, who identified herself as Hurera, said the bombers were driving in a car when they threw the explosive devices and zoomed off.
“Casualty rate might be massive because it happened twice in a busy place, Bauchi Road Motor Park at about 6:45 p.m.,” she said. “The first one exploded at the main motor park, the second one was beside the park.”
She said operatives of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis were seen evacuating bodies and those who sustained injuries to hospitals.
Police authorities in the state have confirmed the incident but said they were unable to determine casualty rate at this time.
The spokesperson of the Plateau state command of the Police, Abuh Emmanuel, told PREMIUM TIMES, “I have just been told of the incident. We have mobilised our men to the scene. For now, I cannot tell you the number of victims.”
The report of the explosion in Jos came hours after another suicide bombing killed 20 people and injured 17 others in Biu, Borno state.
The suicide bomber, driving a tricycle, had scaled through a security checkpoint, blasting himself near a crowded neighbourhood.
The suicide attack occurred at about 3pm when the male bomber sneaked past a the checkpoint which another suicide bomber attacked last Wednesday, and detonated the explosive after alighting from a commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke Napep.
A witness, who identified himself as Nasiru, said, “The suicide bomber had come off the Keke Napep and was heading towards the roadside when the bomb went off, killing those that were inside the Keke Napep and those standing by the road side.
“Though the suicide bomber did not die immediately, he was later shot dead by angry members of Civillian-JTF. Many have been injured and some have died including the suicide bomber.”[Premium Times]
