• Obasanjo, Gowon, Shonekan, Amaechi in attendance
President Goodluck Jonathan has advised his newly wedded daughter, Faith and son-in-law, Godswill Edward, to always resolve their problems themselves without calling on outsiders.
He stated this at the wedding reception held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, adding that it was a glorious sadness to give one’s daughter out in marriage.
Earlier at the church service held at the Christian Centre, three former leaders including ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, General Yakubu Gowon and Chief Ernest Shonekan were present. Also in attendance was Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, who had been at loggerheads with President Jonathan.
The ceremony started at exactly 10.56 am when Jonathan and his wife, Patience, wearing blue traditional attire led Faith into the National Christian Centre, venue of the wedding, accompanied by family members.
The marriage ceremony was officiated by the Prelate of Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Primate. Nicholas Okoh, assisted by Bishop of Kubwa Diocese, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Bishop Timothy Akamisoko. The couple later exchanged their vows after which they were pronounced husband and wife.
The groom, Godswill took the first bible lesson from Genesis Chapter 2, verse 9, while the bride took the second lesson from Ephesians Chapter 5: 21-33
In his sermon on the occasion, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, admonished the couple to live in peace and harmony. While specifically speaking to the husband, Adeboye advised him as the head of the house not to criticise his wife but rather correct her with love.
Adeboye, who said he had 47 years experience in marriage, stressed that success or failure of marriage depended on the use of the tongue.
His words: “You are the head of the family. Being the head means that you are extremely important. Success or failure of the marriage rests on you. The head contains the eyes, it is the light of the body; so, you decide where the marriage will go. The head also have two ears and one mouth. Be swift to hear, but slow to speak.
He added, “When your wife cooks for you, don’t think it will be like that of your mother. Your mother has been on it for long. If there is too much salt in the food or the meat is tough, don’t blame her but try and use wisdom to tell her.”
To the parents on both sides, Adeboye told them not to interfere in the affairs of the couple, saying, “those who God has joined, let no man put asunder”.
Prayers were later offered by President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor and other clergies in attendance.
The couple later signed marriage register.
