Nigeria police to begin development of criminal record register

The Nigeria Police has said that it would soon start developing criminal records register in a bid to curb crime in the country.

The police spokesperson, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, has signed an agreement with the Association of Criminal Records Office based in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Ojukwu said there is a need for the synergy in order to reequip the police security architecture.

“When fully operational, this synergy will, among other things, review Nigeria police criminal justice system, develop criminal records register, provide police with electronic criminal records gadgets, and modernize police information technology needs,” Mr. Ojukwu said.

There were presentations on benefits of the electronic finger print data base, basically for the records register made by David Mckinney and Graeme Wallace from ACRO.

Also in attendance during the presentations were members of the Nigeria Police Forum, Metropolitan Police U.K, representatives from the Ministry of Police Affairs, Prisons, Economic and Financial Crime Commission and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Mr. Arase said that the benefit of having forensiled investigation cannot be overemphasized, as this fortifies the strategic importance of partnering with ACRO.
