Kano sunday explosion kills 5

A bomb targeting church worshippers at the Sabon Gari area of Kano killed five people early Sunday, witnesses and police said.

The victims include a soldier, two men, a lady and a child.

At a separate location, a female suicide bomber targeting the North West University in Kano was forced to detonate her explosive vest by the police at Kofar Nasarawa gate.

The spokesperson of the police in the state, Magaji Majiya, who confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone, said the attack in Sabon Gari was from an Improvised Explosive Device that was thrown at the crowd of persons returning from church.

“The bomber threw the bomb which exploded by the road side killing the five persons instantly,” he said of the first attack.

On the blast at North Western University, Mr. Majiya said “only the young female suicide bomber was killed by her device, while five of our officers sustained injuries and were promptly taken to the Hospital”.

Four of the officers have been discharged, he added.

The attack followed a blast on Thursday that killed at least one person in a bus park in the city.

Also on Sunday, police authorities said they foiled another bomb near a Mosque on Saturday.

Police said anti-bomb personnel arrived and detonated the explosive device after packed in a 406 Peugeot car near the Isiyaka Rabiu Mosque after residents raised the alarm.

Mr. Majiya said three persons were arrested‎ in connection with the attack on Sabon Gari church goers, while two others were arrested in connection with last night bomb discovery.

“All the arrested suspects are being interrogated now,” he said.
