It was the first leg of this year’s Star Music Trek but it paraded the best of Nigerian musical acts. Name them: Wande Coal, KCee, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Black Magic, Oritsefemi, and Cynthia Morgan were all on the bill. And they gave their best performances ever.
The show, which took place on May 2 at the Municipal Garden, Calabar, Cross River State, was sponsored by premium beer, Star lager. It saw fans trooping in en-masse at about 8pm when the show kicked off with the host for the night, comedian Lafup.
A few minutes later, the show began with amazing local talents thrilling the crowd. Black Magic was the first to mount the stage and the crowd didn’t stop cheering as he performed hit songs like ‘Rainbow’, ‘Repete’, ‘Africa’, and ‘Pass You By’ featuring Oritsefemi, who later took over the stage. The artiste went back to his first hit, ‘Mercies Of The Lord’, and became very emotional; recounting how much God has blessed him. Quickly, he bounced up with ‘Redi’, ‘Sexy Lady’, and ‘Double Wahala’ to crown it all up, leaving the crowd reeling with excitement.
At about 12:30am, petite singer, Chidinma whose birthday was on that day mounted the stage. She asked the crowd to sing her a birthday song, which they did, and this set the mood for her performance. She later hit the crowd with songs like ‘Oh Baby’, ‘Kedike’, ‘Shoki Remix’, and ‘Emi Ni Baller’ among others.
Shortly after, a DJ battle ensued between Mavins Records’ DJ Big N and DJ Snoop Da Damaja. Following this battle was Burna Boy’s performance. The reggae dance hall artiste delighted the crowd with hit songs such as ‘Don Gorgon’, ‘Kush’, ‘Like To Party’, ‘Check & Balance’, and ‘Gba Gbe’.
However, the big surprise of the night was ‘Limpopo’ singer, Kcee, who appeared on stage to the delight of the crowd. Apart from ‘Limpopo’, he performed ‘Turn by Turn’ and ‘Pull Over’. He then conducted a mini dance competition and surprised the winner with a sum of N50, 000. Following Kcee’s performance was queen of ragga/dancehall, Cynthia Morgan, who stormed the stage with her trademark red hair. She performed hit songs such as ‘Shoki Rmx’, ‘Run Their Mouth’, ‘Don’t Break My Heart’, ‘Lead Me On’, ‘German Juice’, and ‘I’m Taken’.
Wande Coal rounded off the show with an exhilarating performance of songs from his debut album, ‘M2M’ including old songs like ‘You Bad’, ‘Bumper to Bumper’, ‘Taboo’, ‘Pere’ and others.
According to the Corporate Media/Brand PR Manager, NB Plc, Edem Vindah, Star larger will continue to support Nigerian music on a large scale. He said: “Over the years, Star beer has demonstrated its support for Nigerian musical talent, and we have brought the best artistes from around the country close to the fans. We keep on doing this because it is a way of giving back – the artistes enjoy the opportunity to tour the country and please their fans and even win new fans, and the fans are inspired to follow their passions and never give up. Incidentally, this was the thinking that inspired this year’s theme ‘My Superstar Story’.”tweet Follow @@metrolens1
