Akinwunmi Ambode has won the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primary.
Ambode’s victory did not come as a big surprise because he had been perceived to be the anointed candidate of APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
Ambode was said to have bragged earlier in a candidate meeting he attended that he had already won and that the primaries was just a mere formality.
As many as 10 of the candidates vying for the opportunity left the venue angrily, and it is unclear if the large-scale disaffection that compelled them to take that action will precipitate further crisis within the APC in Lagos that might lead to the party losing the key state.
The victory of Ambode over Supo Shashore, a candidate preferred by the current governor, Babatunde Fashola, re-asserts Asiwaju Bola Tinubu firm control of the state’s political party machinery.
